Our Story

Back in 2009, Homespun started with a farmer and an idea.

For more than a decade, the farmer had traveled each weekend to sell his free-range beef at farmers’ markets in the cities. But one morning, as he crossed the Shenandoah and crested the Blue Ridge, he got to wondering.

What would it take to bring authentically local, 100% grass-fed burgers to my hometown?

He knew it wouldn’t be easy. This type of farming is old-fashioned. It takes time to raise beef the way nature intended—free-range, on pasture. Just as importantly, it takes access to processing, trucking, and warehousing, important resources that most small farms can only dream of. But even after all of that, the biggest challenge still remained. Who, exactly, was going to make all of those delicious grass-fed burgers?

Well, the farmer told himself, it seems clear enough. I’ll just have to start a restaurant.

Eleven years later, Homespun was born. It’s been a long journey. Good things take time.
